Glossary of Commonly Used RP Terms:
IAPW: “In a perfect world”, where we are right now.
Boards: The areas where members may create threads. In example, “Gryffindor Common Room” is an RP board.
Subboards: Basically, boards within boards. In example, “Important Information” is a board and “Site Rules” is a subboard.
Thread: On any forum, the only area that you are able to post to. In example, Character Development is a board, Character Plots and Relationships is a subboard, and "Adriana Bell" is a thread.
RP: "Role Play", specifically a thread where characters interact with one another to act out a short period of time, a conversation, or a series of connecting events.
Tagline: The short description under a board title. "Character Development" is the board title, and "Once your sorted come develop your character further." is the tagline.
Puppeteer: the person on the other end of the screen who writes for the characters on the website, who lives and breathes.
RL: "Real Life", the life of the puppeteer outside of the Internet. Can be used in reference to world or current events.
IRL: "In Real Life", a common acronym used in the cbox or other chats to reference actions outside of the RP board.
Canon: happening within the Harry Potter series. Quite literally a fact set down by the author. Sometimes information given by the author in interviews can be considered canon information as well. This is a good source to double-check your posts and make sure that you are writing in canon, Although this an AU forum things maybe different.
OC: "Original Character", a character that is not canon, but is created from scratch by the puppeteer.
OOC: "Out Of Character", when RP is no longer required or being used. Commonly placed before messages during RPs when puppeteers need to ask one another questions (in example, "OOC: should we end this here?"), or applied to entire boards, such as the games area.
Sig or Siggie: the banner placed within the "Signature" box of a member, generally displaying the celebrity and name of the member. Should not exceed 250X500 pixels on this board.
Avi: abbreviation of "avatar". Small picture displayed beneath the name and group of a member, usually displaying their celebrity.
God Modding: within an RP, where one puppeteer writes the actions of a character outside of their control. It is against the rules to GodMod in RPs, because it keeps the other RPers from being in control of their own actions. In Example:
[/i][/quote]
Canon-verse: the “universe” of the series...basically a form of the term “canon”.
Mary Sue: where an “original” character is introduced to an RP board, and the puppeteer simply inserts themselves into the canon-verse. A Mary Sue specifically is a female RPer who creates herself as a character.
Gary Stu: where an “original” character is introduced to an RP board, and the puppeteer simply inserts themselves into the canon-verse. A Garty Stu specifically is a male RPer who creates himself as a character.
One Liner: within an RP, where a character responds with a very short phrase rather than writing what would be considered a complete post. In example: “Alice said, “That's nice, Bella”. One-liners make it extremely difficult for other RPers to continue a thread.
Plot or Plotline: there are several types of plots on an RP board. Characters and the way that they interact with one another form plots. A plot does not necessarily have to be a single RP. A group of RPs may also form a plot.
Spamming: on an RP board, spamming occurs when members post in the wrong places. If someone writes out of character within one of the RP boards, they are spamming the site. Spamming also happens when people create plotlines where they move from one location to another and make threads across the boards that they only post once or twice in.
First Person: where a post is written with “I, me, and mine”. In example, “I sat down in Bella's kitchen and waited for her to return. I really wanted to go shopping right after school, but I knew she had to eat before we could. Sometimes even I wished that Edward would just change her so that none of us had to deal with her humanity any longer. She was practically my little sister anyway.” This is not permitted on DOT.
Third Person: where a post is written with “his, hers, theirs”. In example, “Alice sat down in Bella's kitchen and waited for her to return. She really wanted to go shopping right after school, but she knew that Bella had to eat before they could go. Sometimes even Alice wished that Edward would just change Bella, so that none of the Cullens had to deal with her humanity any longer. She was practically Alice's little sister anyway.” This is what members are expected to RP in on DOT.
Mod: on a forum, a person with the capacity to edit other peoples' posts, lock threads, and give other members warnings when they break the board rules.
Admin: on a forum, a person who has the capacity to create, move, delete, or edit boards. Admins also have all the abilities of Mods.
PM or PMing: “Private Message”, the email-like system built into the forum that allows members to communicate individually. PMs cannot be seen by anyone other than the person who sends it and the person who receives it. They can, however, be forwarded, so share information with caution.
Glossary of IAPW Boards:
Important Information: (Site Rules, Character Registration). Members should use these boards to register their characters with the Admins. Until a character is approved in Character Registration, members are not permitted to post within the RP boards.
Character Development:
Celebrity Claim: All members should “cast” their character as a celebrity, and use this person to represent their character in sigs and avitars.
Character Plots and Relationships: Members can create threads for their characters where other members may apply to be their friend, enemy, boy/girlfriend, et cetera. It is encouraged that even canon characters create a thread here, so that original characters can contact them and form plotlines with them.
Profiles: generally for original characters, members can post information about their histories and their personal likes and dislikes so that canon characters and other RPers have something to reference in order to learn about them.
Request or Donate a Character: where members can request that others take on a specific
character, such as a mother or a husband. Members are not guaranteed that their requests will be fulfilled, however.
Hogwarts, London, and other Places: RP boards where members are required to write in character, in the third person. No OOC conversations are permitted.
Extras:
Attendance: if Real Life has to take a member away from the boards for more than a day, please post in attendance. That way, people that they are RPing with will not feel as though the absent member has abandoned their threads, and the admins will know where they are. If the member does not post in attendance and they are gone for a length of time, admins will make their character available again (this specifically applies to canon characters, but original characters should be polite and post here too). It is not necessary to give details of the reason for the absence, if members do not feel comfortable putting personal information onto the boards.
Chat: this is where members may speak as the puppeteers about subjects that do not relate to the RP, such as other books or world events.
Fanfiction Gallery: members may post fanfiction that they have written, post links to fanfiction they have written, or share the work of other authors. Members may also post or share fanart.
Fun Stuff: forum games, which can be played OOC, but sometimes are more fun if members remain in character while they're playing. Some games may overflow into the rest of the forum (in example, duck duck goose is seen in the rest of the forum through signatures) but should not interfere with RPing.
Graphic Request: members may come here to request that others make siggies or avis for them, but they should remember to be polite about it. In example, requesting that Bella makes a sig at the same time as Victoria and then choosing the better one means that the member has wasted Bella's or Victoria's time in making the graphic. This is rude, and will annoy the puppeteers. Members are asked to give credit to those who make them banner and icon sets, as well.
OOC Profiles: members can talk about their personal lives here, but are asked to do so with caution. IAPW is not responsible for any misfortune that befalls members if they share too much information, because the administration has no way of verifying who receives it.
The Wishing Well: members can make suggestions for the site here. Admins will review each suggestion individually. In example, if someone would like to see a board that doesn't exist, like “Spinners End”, they can request that the admins add it. Members can also make other requests here, in example “I think that members should have money as a part of their mini-profiles, so that they can buy things from the store and Diagon Alley, and the money should be determined by posts.” Admins may not approve every suggestion, but they will debate them privately and respond to posts made within the wishing well to tell members what their decision is. This is a way for members to make suggestions that the rest of the site can see, rather than PMing them privately to the admins. It also ensures that both admins will see it...rather than one responding “No,” to a PM and the other saying they'd do it.

God Modding: within an RP, where one puppeteer writes the actions of a character outside of their control. It is against the rules to GodMod in RPs, because it keeps the other RPers from being in control of their own actions. In Example:
The wrong way to post:
Alice looked up as Bella entered the room and put down her keys. She didn't say anything, but Bella began to make some food for herself. Finally, Alice said, “Hello, Bells.” Realizing that she wasn't alone, Bella jumped in fright. She turned around and laughed because Alice had startled her.
The right way to post:
Alice looked up. “Hello, Bells,” she said, wondering where her friend had been. She'd let herself into Charlie's house and waited for Bella to return, knowing that she would because it was close to dinner time, and hoping that she wasn't going out to Port Angeles without Alice.
