For everyone who's new to RPing, it might be helpful to open a second window to the main forum page and use this page as a reference to get your account set up.
TO MAKE A CHARACTER AND JOIN THE RP:
1. Create an account and verify your email address. This is not hard...beneath the main page banner, there is a message that says "Hey, guest. Register or Login." Click on the "Register". Follow the instructions.
2. Apply for a character. If you want an original student character (one you made up yourself), go here. If you want an original Adult character go here.If you'd like to play a character from the Harry Potter series, first check to make sure that the character you want is available here and then look at the application located at the bottom of the post. Copy the information within the "code" box, whichever application you decide to use. Past the application as a reply and fill it out. An Admin will approve or deny you shortly. Be patient--the admins have real lives too sometimes. If your application is taking a long time, they may be debating your acceptance, or they might not be accepting your character type at the moment. It doesn't hurt to PM Adriana or Regulus and ask politely what's taking so long.
3. Next, chose a face for yourself. It adds a sense of reality to your character and makes it much easier for you to RP. Check the list here to verify that the celebrity you want has not already been claimed by another member. Then post in this thread to claim your celebrity. An admin will add your name to the list so that no other members can have your "face".
4. Fill out a Character Profile so that you can begin building your character. This verifies that you know enough about your canon character to play them, and it provides the rest of the site a reference for the life of your original character. Profiles are very useful, as silly as they may seem for people like the cannons. They contain standard information (hair color, height, eye color) that comes in handy in RPs. If you cant think of anything to write, look at all the other profiles posted by members to get an idea.
5. Browse through the forums to get a good idea of what RPing is. Read a few threads to see how the writing is done. Go to the RP Academy and read through the tutorials, the FAQs, and post once in the practice threads. Glance through the glossary, but it's a good idea just to know that it's there in case you see something or you're asked to do something and you don't understand the terminology.
6. Make your character a thread in the Character Plots and Relationships board. This is a good way to meet other characters and establish how you intend to RP with them, keep track of your friends and enemies and loved ones. Personally, I like to keep a list of my RPs in my character's Plot thread too, so that I can see which ones I'm working on and what order they go in.
7. Apply for a house, if you feel that your character really really needs one. DO NOT DO THIS BEFORE COMPLETING THE ABOVE STEPS! It will annoy the admins in the long run if you ask for a house before you've gotten your character approved. Now that ther'es a checklist, there's no excuse but laziness for this type of mistake.
8. RP SOMEWHERE. It doesn't matter if this is a three-post thread with someone you never RP with ever again. Get started. Try posting in other members' Plot threads and seeing if any of them are interested in RPing with you (many will have "RP?" included in their criteria to be added to their threads). If you can't find someone to RP with that way, don't be shy. Ask someone in the cbox if they'd like to RP. More often than not, they're willing and happy to.
9. If you have any questions about something that is not addressed on this list, feel free to contact one of the admins and ask them what you should do. We're all more than happy to help--this is a friendly, open community. We were all new once. Don't get discouraged, and have fun! Once you've got the hang of this, it's easy.
